Crunch Time for Girls Volleyball Team
After starting the season 7-2 to match their win total from all of last season the WCC Viking girls volleyball team’s hot start has cooled as they have lost three of their last four matches. This past tuesday was a big test at home against SUNY Orange after they won at SUNY Orange two weeks earlier for the first time in three seasons. Playoff implications for both the Mid-Hudson Conference and Region XV were on the line and they could have had the season sweep over SUNY Orange but they missed the first serve and the defense fell apart and they ultimately came up short of a victory as they lost three close sets in a row.
For the Vikings Lindsay Leggio recorded a double-double with 19 assists and 11 digs. Madison Young had the team high 12 kills along with 2 blocks and 2 digs. Alysha Owens had 9 blocks, 6 kills, and 3 digs. Taylor Mello added 4 kills and 10 digs. I had a chance to speak with Lindsay Leggio and Taylor Mello after last Tuesday’s loss to Orange and they shed some light on what exactly happened. “We have a good defense but we were out of sync after we missed the first serve” said Leggio. “They were prepared for us after we beat them and they kept attacking our weaker side of the court.” said Mello. They went on to mention that stamina was an issue as they had played five matches in a four day span.
Their next match was a losing effort against Ulster County CC in Stone Ridge. The match featured five sets and the team played with a sense of urgency as at this point in the season every loss in painful in their chase for the postseason. Although a loss, there were positives heading into Saturday’s double header against Kingsborough and Queensborough in Brooklyn.
The Vikings got back on the winning track in Saturdays first match against Kingsborough. After falling behind 0-2 in the first two sets, they stormed back to win three straight sets to take the match 3-2. In the second match against Queensborough the wheels came off as they were swept in three straight sets.
Seven matches remain as time is running out to clinch a playoff spot in the Mid-Hudson Conference and Region XV tournaments. With a record of 8-5 and seven to play running the table has to be in the back of everyone’s mind. The talent on this team is for real and it should make for an exciting finish to a great season.
