WCC Cross Country Has A New Coach At The Helm
The Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams at WCC have a new head coach. The fall activity, which became an official varsity sport recently in 2016, will be led this year by Meron Simon, a competitive runner with an impressive student record in NCAA and ACC events.
Simon is from Seattle, Washington and came to New York last year. Before getting hired at WCC, Simon was an assistant coach at the Sacred Heart High School for Girls in Greenwich, Connecticut. Simon received his Bachelor’s Degree in Communications at University of Washington in 2015. At both the University of Washington and North Carolina State University, where he earned further certification, Simon qualified for the NCAA Division 1 Championships in Cross Country. At UW he was rated All-American in the Distance Medley Relay. At NC State he achieved All-ACC and All-Region status as a competitor.
When Simon was asked what drew him to coaching he said, “It’s something I’ve been interested in for quite a while. I always loved the sport and wanted to stay with it after competing for so long.” He went on to say that he learned a lot and had a great experience coaching at Sacred Heart, and that he was grateful for his time there. He came to Westchester to be part of a Running Group with the friends he made during his time at NC State.
While at Washington, Simon became a celebrity for a finish to a race that student athletes dream of. While competing in the Pepsi Team Invitational in Eugene, Oregon in 2015, Simon steadily lagged the front runner, Oregon’s Tanguy Pepiot. The win seemed in the bag for Pepiot until the final seconds, when Simon in a burst of speed, sprinted across the finish line to victory. Posted on YouTube, the tape of the finish had over 4 million hits, according to the WCC Athletic Department.
When asked about this season’s prospects for Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Simon said, “I really like what I’ve seen so far, the turnout has been great and we’re still growing.” Coach Simon is currently welcoming recruits for both the men’s and women’s teams.
