Basketball Team Preview

The Westchester Community College Men’s Basketball team will begin their 2018-19 season visiting Lincroft, NJ, tipping off against Brookdale Community College in the first of four scrimmages. This will be the Basketball program’s second season following a three year interval period due to transcript forgery; Head Coach Tyrone Mushatt and Assistant Coach Richard Field’s positions were terminated in 2014 when news broke, along with eight games forfeited last year.

The WCC Vikings were undefeated in their 2017-18 campaign; sacrificing eight games, contests that were played and won, prevented the team from entering the playoffs and ultimately competing for the National Championship in the Division XV conference. Stemming from the investigation conducted by The Journal News, Florida A&M University has pulled full athletic scholarships from two men coming from the Westchester Community College Basketball program; Jamell Walker, notable former player for the Mount Vernon Knights, and Damien Davis, a former prominent player from Wings Academy in the Bronx.

Sean Kelly, a “longtime veteran of the NJCAA… [with] background in NJCAA compliance” according to Athletic Director Michael Belfiore, was introduced as head coach last season. He has coached at Bergen Community College and Bronx Community College. During his time at Bergen, Kelly’s team set the all time record for wins in a season with 34, and also recorded an undefeated campaign as coach in 2010. Later on at Bronx Community College, Coach Kelly composed a 74-43 record and ushered his team to the CUNY Athletic Conference Championship.

This year, following an unbelievable season winning 18 consecutive games that went unrewarded due to academic violations, the goal is to achieve a “National Championship,” as believed by second year player Jon Brennan. “The college season is a grind… [we] come in everyday ready to compete.” He later adds, “Coach Kelly always talk about W.I.N. … it stands for what’s important now, that’s the key for pushing forward.” Focusing on what’s happening in the moment was the point of emphasis for the team, that attitude will look to be continued and built upon.

With try-outs for this year’s team held on Monday, Oct. 1st, that what’s important right now mentality is something that’ll be sought after by Coach Kelly and his staff. This season’s tipoff for the Vikings will take place on Friday, Nov. 2nd, followed by their second game happening that next day, Saturday; WCC will be hosting both games on the Valhalla Main Campus in the gymnasium, those two opponents have yet to be announced.
