Healthy Food Bites To-Go: These Are a Few of My Favorite (Healthy) Things

The word “FOODIE” has gotten stale over time. What was once a distinguished title, used sparingly, and reserved for those food adventure seekers keen on trends, product launches, eating education and culinary tourism, has become a word much bemoaned by food industry insiders.

This installment of ‘Healthy Food Bites To-Go’ is dedicated to the definition of a foodie which refuels this health writer’s drive to scour the marketplace for better-for-you food finds.

What’s a “FOODIE?”

On the curriculum vitae of a foodie, “eating” is listed as a hobby. The foodie lives to eat, and to eat to live is definitive boredom. A true foodie clings to all things culinary. From soup to nuts, a foodie seeks out the fun stuff about fine fare, along with the arcane, the academic, the in-depth, and the latest. To find the perfect cheese or the best macaroon recipe is life’s work.

To this whole food, plant-based foodie, eating better is about playful experimentation and having fun.

With this in mind, consider these delicious, healthy food finds that check all of the boxes for wallet-friendliness, nutrient density, sustainable energy and most importantly palette pleasing.

HOT STUFF

For those who like Chorizo – spicy, smoky Spanish pork sausage, or for those seeking authentic and perfectly seasoned meat-free alternatives, this one is not to be missed. Soy Chorizo from Trader Joe’s was named favorite product by employees (more popular than the meat version because of its’ taste!) This generous link is only $2.29 at Trader Joe’s.

70% of meat eaters are substituting a non-meat protein at least once a week. 22% say they are doing it more often than they did the year before. As a result, plant-based protein like this one is in hot demand. Use chorizo in tacos, burritos, scrambled eggs, chili, pasta, stir-fries and more.

VEG OUT

It’s widely known that flash frozen vegetables, harvested at the peak of their nutritional potency are an economical and less perishable way to eat your veggies year round. This super convenient 5.5 lb bag of premium Stir-Fry Vegetable Blend from Kirkland is a steal. The combination of snap peas, broccoli, green beans, carrots, red pepper, broccoli, mushrooms, yellow onion  and water chestnuts paired with pure whole grains, lean protein, seasoning, light sauces and healthy toppers (nuts and seeds) makes healthy eating quick and affordable. Get more vegetables into your diet without worrying about purchasing fresh produce which soon spoils in the crisper.

NO MONKEYING AROUND

The non-dairy milk business is booming! Now Banana milk is making a wave in the US marketplace. It’s been wildly popular in Korea. Mooala’s Banana Milk is a fruit-based fusion of banana puree, sunflower seeds, cinnamon and sea salt. It is vegan and gluten-free, and a tasty option for lactose intolerant sippers. No added sugars or carrageenan. Try cooking oatmeal with banana milk, adding it to a peanut butter smoothie or baking with it.  www.Mooala.com

COCONUT BLISS

This Vanilla Coconut Milk yogurt from Coyo is handcrafted from the squeezed flesh of the coconut.  The result is this outrageously creamy product with the richness of any milk-based yogurt currently on the market. It’s dairy, soy and preservative-free. No sugars are added to the yogurt and no cows are inconvenienced in its’ preparation. Toss a scoop over fresh or frozen fruit with maple syrup, a favorite granola and super seeds (chia, flax or hemp) for a party in a bowl.  www.Coyo.com
