Chester Moves on to Round Two in Mascot Madness
In a stunning upset, Chester the Viking reigned victorious in the first round of Mascot Madness. For the sixth year in a row SUNY has pitted all of the state school mascots against each other to find the best mascot by the process of voting.
WCC’s beloved mascot now faces off against Victor E. Knight of SUNY Geneseo. The polls for this match up will close at 4 P.M. on Wednesday Mar. 21.
In Chester’s first round, he went up against Blaze the Bronco who represented SUNY Delhi, and won with 68 percent of the votes.
“Entering Mascot Madness, I was a little bit concerned about the community response, only because there were a lot of reasons in place for this contest to not go well,” said Michael Spinner, Assistant Director of the Athletics Department. “We are a commuter campus that was on Spring Break, so we didn’t have the ability to put signs up around the residence halls and student center that SUNY Delhi had.”
Even with the lack of contact to the student body WCC managed to overtake the four-year college.
“Ultimately, SUNY Mascot Madness is a competition, but it really is a community engagement exercise,” said Spinner. “Chester The Viking is the best mascot in the SUNY system, there is no competition.”
By the time this publication goes to print, only hours will be left to vote for Chester. To check on his progress or to cast a vote, readers are encouraged to visit gowccvikings.com.
