The Viking News is proud to announce winning second place in the national competition of Best Newspaper at a two year school at the Spring National College Media Convention in Manhattan.

According to the College Media Association (CMA) website, the David L. Adams Apple Awards are awarded annually to the “Best of Show” at the CMA Spring Conference.

This is the first award of any kind for The Viking News since winning third place of best two year college newspaper at the 2000 National College Publications Workshops in Chicago. After 18 years, many sleepless nights of writing and editing and lots of hours spent working and laughing with our team in our office, we are overjoyed to be able to call ourselves an award winning newspaper once again.

Some factors that make a good college newspaper which were mentioned at the CMA Conference included how relevant stories are to students and how interesting the photos and layout of the paper are.

What it really comes down to in the end is dedication and hard work in a team that is tightly knit and efficient.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our editors who work tirelessly every week to make our deadlines, our advisors who help us deal with everything involved in producing a college newspaper, and our writers and anyone who has ever made a contribution to the paper. Without our writers we would have no paper, especially not an award winning one.

And a special thank you goes out to our readers. Without our audience, student faculty, staff and administration alike, we would would have no one to report to. This award is not just a win for The Viking News, but for all of WCC.

We are proud to be your local news source, and we hope you can be proud of us too.
