Women’s Team Drops Thriller to Dutchess
Alexandria Knight (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley HS) scored 16 points, including six straight during a fourth quarter run that briefly gave WCC the lead, and Denise Crockett (Mount Vernon, NY/Thornton HS) added 13 points, but the Westchester Community College Women’s Basketball team dropped a thriller at home, 55-50 on Thursday night at Viking Gymnasium. With the loss, the Vikings fall to 0-5.
It was a game of runs as neither team led by more than seven points during any stretch of the game. Late in the first quarter, Knight scored five straight points during the final minute of play to stretch a one-point edge into a 17-11 lead after 10 minutes. However, Dutchess responded during the second quarter, outscoring the hosts by six, and tying the score late as the teams were even, 24-24 at the break.
The teams remained tied after three quarters, setting up an incredible stretch during the final 10 minutes as both teams saw leads change. At one point, Dutchess led by six, but Knight and Ambar Rincon (Yonkers, NY/Yonkers HS) combined for 10 straight WCC points, and a 10-4 run saw the game tied at 47 with 3:31 to play. However, two straight missed WCC lay-ups led to conversations by the visiting Falcons, and Dutchess missed only one free throw down the stretch, giving DCC their fifth win of the season.
Rincon finished with six points, as did Shanaya Jones (Bronx, NY/Health Opportunities HS).
