The WCC men’s Soccer season has come to an end. In spite of the loss in the region XV quarter finals, their season is far from a failing one.
The Vikings delivered a season packed with valiant efforts and thrilling victories. The team itself obviously had a few accomplishments but individuals themselves shined as well.
None more prominent than team leader Joel Arevalo who received the mid-hudson soccer conference mvp honors.
Jamar Gayle’s team high 15 goals led him to an all conference first team selection. Next to him is team veteran Luis Morales. “ It’s a great feeling definitely something I wanted to accomplish”. Said Morales when referring to his all conference selection.
Miguel Perez, Mate Mgeladze, and Ivan Ochoa also received mid-hudson first and second team honors respectively. However, before the regular season ended and the previously named Vikings received these honors they played their final game of the season.
In this game WCC walked away with their final win of the season, which came against Middlesex Community College. The Vikings took the win in dominant fashion defeating Middlesex 6-2 on their home field.
WCC took an early lead with an assisted goal from Miguel Perez to Jamar Gayle. Middlesex would tie the game but Gayle would yet again found the goal in the 34th minute in order to put The Vikings up 2-1. This lead wouldn’t last long as Middlesex would tie the game before the half.
That game-tieing goal would be the last time Middlesex would find the net for the rest of the game. The second half was all Vikings all day. WCC went on to shutout Middlesex 4-0.
WCC scored 4 times within 12 minutes. Luis Morales, Mate Mgeladze, Davis Perez, and Manuel Tejeira all scored in that 12 minute span. The Vikings certainly ended the season with a bang.
The Vikings ended the regular season with a solid 8-4 record. This was more than adequate enough for earn their playoff birth. Sadly The Vikings fell in the quarterfinals of the playoffs to Suffolk County.
Both team played majority of the first half to a stand still. However in the very final minute of the half Suffolk scored the game’s first goal.
Six minutes into the the second half Miguel Perez scored a goal to even things up at 1 a piece. Things started to take a left turn for the Vikings after this. Suffolk would go on to score 2 goals in less than 15 minutes.
Before all hope was lost for the Vikings Jamar Gayle scored a goal in the final minutes of the game. Now only down 1 goal WCC gave their best efforts to tie the game. Unfortunately the comeback was not able to be completed.
The vikings have plenty of reasons to walk away from this season with their heads held high.
When asked how the team could improve next season Luis Morales had this to say. “Play one game at a time”.
