WCC Men’s Soccer has endured a fairly successful season thus far. Before entering their match against Suffolk County the Vikings were undefeated at home.WCC walked into this bout with a comfortable 4-0 home record.
Suffolk and BMCC county proved to be quite the formidable opponents for the Vikings. The Vikings lost a nail-biter to Suffolk County 3-2 on Oct. 5. The loss unfortunately cost WCC its undefeated home streak.
Team leader Joel Arevalo found the corner of the net for the team’s first score of the game in the 24th minute. About 15 minutes after that Ladron de Guevarra would add a second goal to the Vikings lead.
The Vikings looked poised to walk away with the victory, however, Suffolk County shocked all with a hellacious second half rally. They went on to score three consecutive goals without an answer from WCC.
Suffolk’s win dropped The Vikings to a 6-3 overall record and 5-3 regional XV record.
Unfortunately WCC’s woes would continue. The team suffered a devastating loss to an undefeated BMCC. The Panthers dominated the Vikings, dropping WCC’s squad to 6-4 overall and 5-4 in region XV.
Despite the loss, WCC did not let this keep them from moving forward and rolling with the punches. One week after the loss to the BMCC, the Vikings netted a huge bounce back win over Kingsborough Community College.
With the win, WCC clinches the 5 seed for the Region XV playoffs. The team will travel to fourth-ranked Suffolk Community College on Saturday, Oct. 21. The Vikings will be looking for revenge for the loss Suffolk handed them earlier in the season.
The Vikings’ midfielder Luis Morales has remained confident entering the postseason.
“I feel like we have a good chance in the playoffs. We just have to stay focused and play one game at a time.”
As the postseason approaches the Vikings look to maximize their potential, silence the doubters, and make a run at the regional XV championship.
